Positive Attitudes are Critical for Unstoppable Leaders
Philippians 4: 4-13
After his conversion Paul became a leader who was on
unstoppable fire with a mission to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout
the known world. He truly practiced what he was preaching. Even while sitting
in a Roman prison, Paul never let go of his passion, mission, vision,
direction, or attitude. Even while chained to the guard Paul never abandoned
his leadership role. Each day while in prison just as outside, Paul continued
to focus on serving God.
The fourth section of the letter to the Philippians is about
rejoicing. This section of the letter reminds the reader that the attitude of
the leader at the beginning of the task will determine the outcome of the task
more than any other aspect of the task or the characteristics of the leader.
This section reinforces that we get more of what we focus on. So if you want
good things and joy you must continue to focus on the positive.
In verses 11-13 Paul maintains a positive attitude even on
the worst days. Here are the examples he sets not only for those early
Christians but Christians today: Regardless of the situation or setting (you
can be have everything or nothing) attitude has little connection to
circumstances. Consider when you see a person who has very little in terms of
material or worldly wealth – yet they have joy. When we let circumstances or
situation dictate the attitude (and often the negative situations get more
play) we allow the external forces into our lives. Every time you have a
self-pity party Hell has a party. Verse 12 shows that attitudes can change and
be improved. We need to look at what can be controlled – and that is the way we
think and feel about a situation or circumstance. Finally leaders need to turn
to Christ for their strength. Christ has the strength, wisdom, and guidance to
serve as a source of a positive attitude. Just like Paul if you adopt this
approach to your attitude you can also become an unstoppable leader.
Not every situation you may face as a leader will be smooth
and easy. Some situations may feel to you as tough as the time Paul was sitting
in a Roman prison. In this spaces it is easy to fall into the trap of feeling
abandoned, alone, angry, and all around negative. Just as Paul role models
keeping a positive attitude even in the face of some of the greatest adversity…
so too should we as leaders maintain a positive attitude. Turning to our joy
that comes through and from Jesus Christ. Keep your mind focused on the
positive things.
